The Safe & Sound Protocol was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges (creator of the Polyvagal Theory) as an auditory intervention to regulate the nervous system and re-pattern neural networks. It uses specially filtered music to induce a physiological state of safety and trust which helps you to move out of defensive states such as fight, flight or freeze and into a place of presence, connection and wellbeing.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
The SSP is designed to improve regulation of the autonomic nervous system in a lasting way. It helps you to build resilience and flexibility so you can meet life more fully and face challenges and stresses with greater ease.
The SSP does this by stimulating the vagus nerve. It is like an exercise for your nervous systems, training your body to better perceive safety within and around you. As you grow more physiological safety, your system starts to move out of a defensive state (fight, flight or freeze) and into a socially engaged state (ventral vagal).

IS THIS FOR ME?
The SSP works well with other therapeutic approaches and modalities. It is non-invasive so is suitable for children and adults with a demonstrated benefit for those with:
stress and anxiety
trauma
long Covid
social difficulties
emotional/ mood difficulties
inattention, ADD, ADHD
auditory hypersensitivity
and sensory processing difficulties.
WHAT DO I NEED TO PREPARE?
The SSP only requires a few pieces of equipment:
a mobile phone for the music app
a pair of over the ear headphones (with noise cancelling turned off)
a computer or iPad for the Zoom sessions if going through the protocol online.
It is also important that you have a space to listen in that feels safe, comfortable and not overly stimulating while completing the SSP.
